Informal Crit

Hey everyone,

I reckon the second year design team worked their ass off, and for no recognition. So how about an informal crit? I say we hijack those hd tv's and do our own crit, or perhaps as BCosby suggested maybe we start a web page where we present all our work as a gallery. Anyone interested in organizing some form of presentation? I feel like our work at least stands up to third year, if not better.

  1. How about grabbing some wall space in the studio and turning that in to a permanent gallery. I think we could be doing that for anything we have from this year or last that we are proud of. Better than it sitting somewhere gathering dust.

  2. Yea that would be great, plus the studio could definitely use some brightening up.

  3. Yes brighten up the studio. But remember most of our projects are digital.

I like the idea of having all our work online.

    There is a website called

    http://www.behance.net/

This site is great for what we want to do.

I have setup one for myself and am slowly putting projects up

  4. Sounds good.

And I'm down for utilising those big screens for some loosely architecture-related movie screenings over the holidays. Maybe we could do a rainy afternoon of crits and films.

I'm in the process of setting up an image page for critters, will do a call for submissions in the near future.

  5. behance seems ok but a tad clunky maybe? will keep my eye out for other platforms..

  6. Ha true Jae.

Still the studio could use a bit of personality, aside from Ray's jellyfish its rather depressing at the moment.

You guys are awesome for being on to the image pages.

Movie viewing, excellent idea, the library has an extensive collection of documentaries, that I've been meaning to get through. Also I got this sustainable architecture mini series narrated by Brad Pitt(random) which is quite a good watch.

Also perhaps we should get a basketball team to hustle all those design students on the new basketball court. You know, Wesley Snipes/Woody White Men can't Jump style.

  7. Rays Jellyfish!!! Now that really is a work of art.

And I have 'My Architect' on a usb drive that we could watch if anyones keen. It's a great movie that sheds some light on Louis Kahn's life and architecture through the eyes of his son.

In the mean time, I'm going to make some macaroni art to put up with Rays jellyfish.
Actually no scratch that I might eat the macaroni, i'm hungry.

Eric and co, do you want to have a wee crit some time this week?
There are quite a few screens sitting around upstairs.

  9. I'm not back in town until Friday.. but I don't necessarily feel the need to have my work critiqued :)

  10. watched a film called 'garbage warrior' quite interesting.

  11. agreed,agreed,agreed

Bliss - doco movies in the library YES

I will also research into something for image board and our own work to be exhibited, Its important to get our work out there, but more important to continue our journey of creative modelling and work beyond the school, this maybe a bit extreme but I think we could work on projects outside of uni, local and international competitions, like the solar decathalon, I feel our year is super strong. I gues we do this in stute

  13. Anyone keen to watch a documentary Thursday or Friday?

Elyse don't think it's extreme at all. It's a great idea.

I don't know what direction everyone else is taking, but I want to experiment heavily with sustainability and social issues. Something that I intend to start engaging more with at uni, but also I would very much like to work on this outside of uni and I think through competitions I might be able to develop my philosophy on the matter.

  14. Watched a show last night on the living channel (oh the joys of being at home) called The Genius of Design. Was really good, looked at Modernism, the Bauhaus, even got to see the interior of Corbusier's house at Stuttgart and someone demonstrating how it worked. All architecture should be presented to us like this. It totally changed my perception of those modern masterpieces as static objects frozen in the 1930s.

There were a couple of other interesting points in the show which I'll bring up in a blog later..

Garbage Warrior is a really good watch. Imagine Jeff Bridges in the Nevada desert building houses out of beer bottles and fighting 'the Man'. I was quite tempted to track him down while driving through Nevada earlier in the year. Next time maybe.

My Architect. It's a shame that the most salient memory of that will always be the scene where he's rollerblading around the central plaza of the Salk Institute.

There are some great documentaries online for those of you who can't be bothered venturing out in the rain. Here's a link to an 8 part documentary on Ian Athfield (briefly featuring Miles Warren) and directed by none other than Sam Neil.

    http://www.nzonscreen.com/title/architect-athfield-1977

Good watch. You can't help but love Athfield after this. It's also interesting to note the contempt for Athfield that Warren barely holds back in this... especially if you've read Warren's autobiography (published much later) where he pretty much sings Ath's praises. Amazing what time can do.

  15. ps yeah I'm down for watching something tomorrow maybe?

  16. Let me know if you want to utilise a School space for doco viewing (e.g. projected on the 'big screen') - I can arrange this for you...

"City of God" would be a good movie to check out also - gritty but raises all sorts of social issues wrt the contemporary metropolis... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City_of_God_%28film%29

I happened to catch one of the Genius of Design episodes also, and thought it was great value...

  17. put me down for watching somthing tomorrow

    ReplyDelete
  18. That would be awesome Michael. Once we get some more people on board I think we will take you up on that. City of God is an excellent movie, and raises a great point that architecture isn't limited to documentaries. Quite a great number of fictional movies deal with architectural elements, which could make for some fun discussions afterward.

Cool John, what time were you thinking of? Any particular movie or topic? I will probably be at uni during the day.

  19. whenever whatever, afternoon is allright, early evening better, others might have work. dont have any movies myself so if someone has somthing. it could be interesting to look at a non arch movie from an arch/social angle

  20. I'm in, will probably be in the studio most of the day.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm keen too.

Eric I hope you haven't been lonesomely been lurking around studio in the holidays?

    whaddabout...
    Bladerunner?
    Metropolis?

I think we need to consult Brett....

  22. Brainstorm! From the depths of my mind (with the help of the internet).

Koyaanisqatsi - No plot. No characters. Just scenes and music.

The Fountainhead - Ayn Rand at her best (worst?)

Manufactured Landscapes - Some kind of narrative about manufacture and waste, really i think the guy just wanted a nice picture or two

    Gattaca - features some FLW

Mon Oncle - Super modern automated living at its 1950s finest

The Lake House - Keanu Reeves plays an architect who falls in love with Sandra Bullock IN THE FUTURE. All-star cast! Twist! Romance! Must see.

500 Days of Summer - Some kid you vaguely recognise plays an architect who falls in love with that girl who looks like that singer.

The Brady Bunch - the dad plays an architect.

A How I Met Your Mother marathon? The guy plays an architect.

The Third Man - Urban decay. Moody shots.

(Tim Burton's) Batman - Dystopia at its creepiest

Ghostbusters - Ghosts vs New York City. What's not to love?

    2001- Minimalists in space

Dr Strangelove - exemplary set design by Ken Adam.

If we can decide by tomorrow morning I'll head to Aro video to pick something up.... Shall we do a screening say 4pm up in studio?

  23. The Fountainhead that is the book you were reading wasnt it Spence?
i have been meaning to read that so the movie would save me a couple of days. I have way to many books im not reading as it is. so put one vote for that.
can I also veto anything with Sandra Bullock in it maybe even suggest it as a critter rule

  24. I always found Hitchcock films to have a nice connection to architecture. Also can't help but love the Frank Lloyd Wright inspired fake house at the end of North by Northwest.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yep, I would be interested to see the The Fountainhead after reading the book.
Keanu Reeves as an architect. Now that I would like to see. "Hey dude, a most excellent facade!".
Any chance we could make it 3pm as I would have to shoot off at 5ish to have dinner with wife and kids.
    Soome other suggestions

    Belly of an Architect
    Visual Acoustics (about Julius Shulman)

  26. 3pm it is. I'll get the dvd.

    See you this arvo.

  27. Visual acoustics is a good one saw it last year at the film festival. Which by the way there are a couple architecture related movies playing this year.

  28. thanks acrosby for organising the movie, same again next friday, m-d are we able to use LT1 for the screening?

  29. Movie night was great.

Figure we have too many discussion entries at the moment so thought I'd put this here as opposed to starting a new entry.

How many of you have mixed and poured concrete? I haven't and just for experience sake would like to buy a mix and give it a go over break. Anyone keen to join me in this rather wasteful experiment? Also would appreciate advice from anyone rather experienced with concrete on ways I could make the most out of this experiment.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I've done it!

I helped my dad lay some foundations for a wall in the garden a couple of years back. It's pretty easy.. you just have to plan out what you're doing.

Why, anything you want to make it particular?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Nothing in particular planned was just thinking along the lines of really heavy foot stool, or really big paper weight. However maybe I'll think of something over the weekend that will make this experiment a little less wasteful. If anyone has ideas let me know. At the moment I can't think of anything I need made out of concrete, just want to do something with it.

  33. Yes, please.Very cool, thank you for sharing that. I might start off with a planter, but ultimately yes I want to do something like that.I'm off to Hamner Springs to sit by a fire for the next 5 days and hopefully make a dent in the pile of books I've been meaning to read. Hope to see heaps of new entries when I get back.
